Safety regulations state that emergency power supply systems can be divided into two macro-categories: centralised systems and distributed systems.<\/p>\n<p>Centralised emergency power supply systems provide power to all users of a system from a single point using a UPS in CPSS configuration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #2ad2c9;\">A CPSS (Central Power Supply System)<\/span> or backup UPS is a centralised power supply system, a UPS uninterruptible power supply with precise characteristics used to power <span style=\"color: #2ad2c9;\">emergency systems<\/span> and, in particular, emergency lighting in buildings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>APPLICATIONS OF A CPSS SYSTEM<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;Row&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|10px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Emergency power can, in any case, be provided for <strong>other safety equipment<\/strong>, such as:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>automatic alarm detection and fire extinguishing systems<\/li>\n<li>paging and calling systems<\/li>\n<li>lifts designed to operate in the event of fire<\/li>\n<li>extraction ventilation systems<\/li>\n<li>safety and carbon monoxide signalling systems<\/li>\n<li>miscellaneous electromedical equipment<\/li>\n<li>Safety systems for particular buildings, e.g. in high-risk areas, safety curtains, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;Row&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>A backup UPS must, to be used in emergency systems, meet the requirements of the European reference standard <strong>CEI\/EN 50171 &#8211; Centralised systems for supplying safety services<\/strong>, in addition to the requirements of standard <strong>IEC EN 62040-3 Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>CEI\/EN 50171 STANDARD<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The CEI\/EN 50171 standard establishes the <strong>characteristics and performance<\/strong> that a centralised UPS must have in order to be used as a power source for emergency lighting systems.<\/p>\n<p>According to the standard, a <strong>CPSS UPS<\/strong> must meet specific <strong>requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In accordance with EN 1838, the CPSS must be able to <strong>supply 120% of the prescribed<\/strong> charge, at least for the duration of the foreseen autonomy (nominal duration) and be able to start up a charge, previously switched off, with a response time of 0.5 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>The inverter must be protected against <strong>reverse battery polarity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The main entrance port and emergency line must be protected by <strong>circuit breakers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The CPSS <strong>must not have external flammable components<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Following a discharge of the full expected range, the CPSS must be able to recharge its batteries to <strong>provide at least 80% of the original range within 12 hours<\/strong> of the start of charging.<\/li>\n<li>The CPSS UPS must have long-life batteries with an expected life declared by the manufacturer of not less than 10 years, while sizing <strong>must provide a project end-of-life of 25%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The batteries must, in accordance with <strong>EN 50272-2<\/strong>, be installed <strong>in rooms with a temperature lower than 25\u00b0C<\/strong>, and an <strong>automatic and manual test<\/strong> device must be provided for regular checking of battery conditions.<\/li>\n<li>The CPS must adopt a <strong>system to protect the battery from complete discharge<\/strong>, an event which would lead to its irreparable damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to guarantee the feasibility of the checks required by law, the EN 50171 standard also stipulates that centralised power supply systems for emergency and safety must be equipped with <strong>operating and measuring devices<\/strong>. The standard also requires the presence of signalling via potential-free contacts relating to battery operation, end-of-range pre-alarm condition and the presence of generic alarm conditions also accompanied by an acoustic warning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because of its particular function, a security installation therefore requires an appropriate choice of CPSS system to be used in accordance with current European legislation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section admin_label=&#8221;Section&#8221;
